National Tutoring Programme information for academic year 2022-2023

Academic Mentors work flexibly with your wider team, developing and delivering bespoke tutoring to help pupils achieve their academic goals. Employing an Academic Mentor can help improve academic outcomes, boost pupil engagement, and aid recovery from lost learning due to the pandemic. Schools receive one tutoring grant to contribute to all tuition routes. This will be paid in termly instalments. You can view your school’s allocation on GOV.UK. In the 2022 to 2023 academic year, up to 60% of tutoring costs are subsidised. Remaining costs can be subsidised using other budgets, such as the Pupil Premium. A maximum hourly per pupil rate applies. These are:

• £18 for mainstream schools, of which the DfE subsidy will be £10.80 (60%)

• £47 for non-mainstream schools, of which the DfE subsidy will be £28.20 (60%)

This means you must record, for all tutoring delivered in 2022 to 2023, the total cost you incur and the number of hours delivered, which you will be required to share with DfE via your funding return in summer 2023. Where your hourly rate (total cost incurred divided by number of hours delivered) is £18 or less (£47 or less for non-mainstream schools), we will cover 60% of the cost you have incurred (subject to your school’s allocation). Where your hourly rate is greater than £18 (or greater than £47 for non-mainstream schools), we will cap your return at the relevant maximum rate.

If you are considering employing an Academic Mentor, and you are a small school or have limited funding, you may wish to consider arrangements with other schools in your academy trust or local area to share this tutoring resource. This flexibility is encouraged if it works best for schools and extends the benefits of tutoring to a higher number of students in need of support.

Schools are welcome to conduct their own evaluations to assess the impact of tutoring. When selecting pupils for Academic Mentor tutoring, you may find it helpful to consider those who are currently tracking behind in reading or writing, preparing for primary assessments, or who would benefit from a boost for GCSE exams or similar. Schools should ensure that they keep track of the number of pupils receiving tutoring, the total pupil hours provided, and the total cost incurred, to be able to fill in the Year-End Statement.

It is for those with lower levels of attainment. It is up for schools to decide which pupils would benefit most from tutoring for example, those with upcoming exams or near a grade boundary for a certain subject.

There is no limit to the number of Academic Mentors you can employ but we would encourage you to check your 2022/23 funding allocation carefully.

Yes, all schools can request an Academic Mentor with up to 60% of the cost subsidised by the 2022/23 funding allocation. The funding you can claim if you employ an Academic Mentor in 2022/23 will be based on the number of hours of tuition delivered. Therefore, the 60% subsidy applies to this hourly rate, rather than their annual salary.
